Justices signal they're ready to make gun ownership a national right

Reporting from Washington - The Supreme Court justices, hearing a 2nd Amendment challenge to Chicago's ban on handguns, signaled Tuesday that they were ready to extend gun rights nationwide, clearing the way for legal attacks on state and local gun restrictions. The court's majority appears almost certain to strike down a Chicago ordinance and rule that residents have a right to a handgun at home. Of U.S. cities, only Chicago and its Oak Park suburb have total bans on handguns. But many cities and states have laws regulating who can have a gun and where they can take it. Gun rights advocates have said they've been waiting for the court's ruling in this case to begin challenging gun regulations nationwide. At one point in Tuesday's argument, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. noted the city's lawyers...

'Tea party' leaders use survey to strike back at critics

Some members of the "tea party" have struck back at media bias against the grassroots political movement and critics who derisively dismiss the group as violent "hicks", opportunists, "teabaggers" or worse. "We decided to learn what tea party leaders are up to in the old-fashioned way. We asked them. We met in person with leaders from 38 states, we collected survey data from 49 leaders," said Eric O'Keefe, chairman and CEO of the Chicago-based Sam Adams Alliance, a nonprofit group that espouses free-market principles. The group on...

Perry Wins Texas Republican Gov. Primary Race

Breathing fire at an Obama-led federal government he says has Texas in its crosshairs, two-term incumbent Republican Governor Rick Perry claimed his party's nomination with more than 50 percent of the vote, avoiding a run off against three-term Republican U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. Hutchison was once seen as the candidate who could deliver Perry's first election loss in a lifetime of public office, but the governor, a darling of the social conservatives, forcefully painted the senator as too entrenched in Washington politics. Speaking at his...

Argentina celebrates diplomatic coup as Hillary Clinton calls for talks over Falklands

Argentina was celebrating a diplomatic coup yesterday in its attempt to force Britain to accept talks on the future of the Falkland Islands, after a two-hour meeting in Buenos Aires between Hillary Clinton and President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. Responding to a request from Mrs Kirchner for “friendly...

Pacific Northwest at risk for mega earthquake

LOS ANGELES - The disaster in Chile has brought new attention to an undersea fault along the Pacific Northwest capable of producing the same type of mega earthquake and inflicting heavy damage on bustling cities like Seattle, Portland and Vancouver. The fault has been dormant for more than 300 years, but when it awakens — tomorrow or decades from now — the consequences could be devastating. The last rupture unleashed the largest known quake to hit the Lower 48 — a magnitude-9 that sent tsunami waves crashing into Japanese...

US cyber defense strategy details hit the Internet

The curtain was pulled back Tuesday on portions of a secret US cyber defense strategy crafted during the administration of former president George W. Bush. White House Internet security coordinator Howard Schmidt described bits of the strategy at the RSA cybersecurity conference here, saying the revelation was part of a promise of transparency by US President Barack Obama. Parts of a Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI) declassified by Obama became available mid-day online at whitehouse.gov/cybersecurity. "We can't ask...

Brown defends DNA database and CCTV extension

Gordon Brown defended the controversial DNA database and plans to extend CCTV today as he put the fear of crime and yobbery at the heart of the election campaign. The Prime Minister attacked the Tories' opposition of the CCTV roll-out and the retention of DNA samples from people arrested but not convicted. In a major speech on law and order, he promised that both would...

Mind-controlled prosthetics without brain surgery

Mind-reading is powerful stuff, but what about hand-reading? Intricate, three-dimensional hand motions have been "read" from the brain using nothing but scalp electrodes. The achievement brings closer the prospect of thought-controlled prosthetics that do not require brain surgery. Electroencephalography (EEG), which measures electrical activity through the scalp, was previously considered too insensitive to relay...

Same-Sex Couples in DC Will Be Able to Apply for Marriage Licenses by Wednesday

Washington (AP) - Gay and lesbian couples will soon be able to marry in Washington, but the debate over same-sex marriage has sounded different here, with references to interracial marriage and Martin Luther King. Over the past year, both sides have courted the support of Washington's black community, a majority of the city's 600,000 residents and one traditionally perceived as opposed to same-sex marriage. "In D.C., outreach to African-Americans wasn't part of the campaign. It was the campaign," said Michael Crawford, the leader of a...

Gay couples now able to marry in church after House of Lords lifts ban

Gay couples will be able to marry in church after the House of Lords last night lifted a ban on same sex unions in religious premises. The vote wipes out one of the final distinctions between marriage and civil partnerships. It provoked warnings that it would undermine the institution of marriage. The move – backed by some Church of England bishops – was hailed as a breakthrough last night by gay rights campaigners. But it is seen by church traditionalists as a damaging step on the road to forcing...

Nigel Farage fined for calling EU president Herman Van Rompuy a “damp rag”

Nigel Farage was fined nearly €3,000 (£2,700) yesterday for his “inappropriate, unparliamentary and insulting” attack on the Belgian EU president. He had said that Herman Van Rompuy had the charisma of a “damp rag”. The former UKIP leader was handed the maximum financial penalty for an MEP after he compounded his misbehaviour by refusing to apologise, Jerzy Buzek, the President of the European Parliament, said. Mr Farage said that he would appeal against his fine of ten days’ MEP allowance, or €2,980. “Free speech is...

GM potato cleared for EU farming

The European Commission has cleared the way for a genetically modified potato to be grown in the EU - only the second GM product it has allowed. The starch of the Amflora potato can be utilised for industrial uses like making paper, and for animal feed - but not for human consumption. Environmental groups have strongly opposed the introduction of GM crops. But the Commission insisted its decision was based on "a considerable volume of sound science".

Dubai police chief says to seek Netanyahu arrest

Dahi Khalfan Tamim "said he would ask the Dubai prosecutor to issue arrest warrants for ... Netanyahu and the head of Mossad," the television said. It did not give details. Tamim has said he is "almost certain" Israeli agents were involved in the killing of Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh at a Dubai hotel in January, calling for Mossad's boss, Meir Dagan, to be arrested if it...

$238 billion loss for U.S. mail; Saturday delivery may end

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Snail mail might soon get even slower. The cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service announced Tuesday that it will incur about $238 billion in losses in the next 10 years if Congress doesn't permit it to revamp its outdated business model. The agency is proposing an adjusted mail service schedule, which will likely cut Saturday delivery, and eliminating its prepaid retiree health benefits. That alone, it says, will cut $90 billion in costs over the next 10 years. The challenges hurting USPS's bottom line reflect a "macro...

Obama to push healthcare overhaul into final act

After a year of debate, compromise, raucous public meetings, major speeches and even a seven-hour "summit" last week with Republican leaders, Obama is due to make a statement at the White House urging Congress to move swiftly toward a vote on legislation. "He will reiterate why reform is so crucial and what it will mean for American families and businesses: they will have more control...

EU to probe credit default swap trades

LONDON (Reuters) - EU internal market commissioner Michel Barnier was quoted on Wednesday as saying Brussels would conduct an internal investigation into the trading of credit default swaps related to Greece and other countries. "I want to know who did what ... I want to understand," Barnier, who has responsibility for financial services in the 27-nation bloc, said in an interview with the Financial Times. The bulk of trading in credit default swaps (CDS) in Europe is transacted in London. Germany and France have called for a crackdown...

Greek cabinet backs sweeping austerity plan - source

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece's cabinet approved a sweeping new austerity programme on Wednesday, the third in as many months, in a drive to rein in a bulging budget deficit and secure European financial support, a government source said. "Measures which will yield 4.8 billion euros (4.3 billion pounds) have been decided," the source, who took part in the cabinet meeting, said. "Half will be from spending cuts and another 50 percent from tax increases." The measures include an increase of value added tax by 2 percentage points to 21 percent...

New ghost towns: Industrial communities teeter on the edge

RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. — When Henry Kaiser arrived 55 years ago, this place was no place — "a rural problem area," the government called it, so poor and isolated that the population had dropped 15% since 1940. That all changed after Kaiser, the industrialist who'd turned out ships and planes at a record pace in World War II, built the nation's largest consolidated aluminum works here...

Fuel Taxes Must Rise, Harvard Researchers Say

To meet the Obama administration’s targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, some researchers say, Americans may have to experience a sobering reality: gas at $7 a gallon. To reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the transportation sector 14 percent from 2005 levels by 2020, the cost of driving must simply increase, according to a forthcoming report by researchers at Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. The 14 percent...

A deafening roar, then tsunami swallowed up village

The Chilean seaside resort of Pelluhue was transformed into a sandy wasteland without warning -- one giant wave, then another, then scores of homes disappeared. The further Chilean emergency services go after the huge earthquake that sparked a twin tsunami , the more grim discoveries they make. "This part was full of houses. There were more than 100," said Silvia Aparicio, a community leader, pointing to the Pelluhue beachfront. "And that's nothing compared to what happened in the Marisquero," she added of a...

Chileans Endure Food Shortages, Looting as Relief Comes ‘Late’

March 3 (Bloomberg) -- Four days after Chile was hit by its strongest earthquake in 50 years, victims are criticizing the government for failing to respond quickly enough to a disaster that left them drinking fetid water and scrounging for food. “No one from the government has even showed up to tell us what to do, much less give us any help,” said Julio Valle, a fisherman...

Ugandan landslide death toll rises to 80

The death toll from the landslide in eastern Uganda has risen to about 80 people and villagers are digging with bare hands and simple tools in the hope of finding survivors, a Government Minister and Ugandan media said yesterday. Ugandan media said the landslide engulfed a village in the eastern Bududa district on the foothills of Mt Elgon on Monday night after a seven-hour downpour. "The latest reports I have, indicate 80 bodies have been pulled out," Tarsis Kabwegyere,..

U.N. Is Faulted as Lacking Coordination of Aid and Security in Haiti

UNITED NATIONS — Humanitarian efforts by the United Nations in Haiti have lacked sufficient coordination with local organizations in delivering aid and establishing security, according to an independent assessment released on Tuesday. One consequence was a surge in the sexual abuse of women and girls living in camps for the displaced, with some young girls trading sex for shelter, said Emilie Parry, an aid consultant who helped write the evaluation of the United Nations’ effort for Refugees International, a nonprofit organization that advocates...

Private armies worry U.N. peacekeepers

Armed militias and mercenaries are at the center of urgent discussions convened by the United Nations in Ethiopia, to explore ways of containing their unlawful activities in Africa, Latin America and Asia. Although armed militant groups remain active in Europe as well, especially in Spain and eastern Europe and the Caucasus, their activities are small when compared with the paramilitary action perpetrated on those three...

IDF: Syria offers Hezbollah greater support than ever

Syria is crossing previous red lines in supplying Hezbollah with weapons, handing over arms that it never before dared transfer to the Lebanese terror group, the head of the IDF's research division of Military Intelligence says. "Syria is handing over to Hezbollah components that it would not dare hand over before," Yossi Baidatz told the Knesset Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee Tuesday...

Russia announces plans to buy four French warships from France

Russia is to buy four warships from France in the biggest defence deal with a Nato member since the end of the Cold War. In a move that has alarmed Georgia and the Baltic States, France and Russia said that they were in “exclusive talks” on the sale of Mistral-class amphibious assault ships. President Sarkozy said that he wanted to “turn the page on the Cold War” after meeting President Medvedev in Paris. Latvia,..

School board tells students to pick a ‘social justice’ cause

Toronto District School Board students will be expected to contribute more to their communities under a new ‘‘social justice action plan’’ unveiled today by education director Chris Spence. The initiative will see every school in the board take on one local and one global social justice issue — such as poverty, equity and environmentalism — in order to “create awareness of how students can be empowered through their leadership to make...

Hitler abortion poster sparks anger in Poland

The provocative images, which appeared in the western city of Poznan as a part of a promised nationwide campaign, also carry the slogan "Abortion for Poles: introduced by Hitler, March 9, 1943." Fundacja Pro, the organisation behind the billboard, said that it wanted to remind Poles that abortion was first introduced to Poland during the Second World War by the country's Nazi...

Poster advertising Christian prayer day banned from library

Staff said council policy prevented them from displaying the poster for Women World Day of Prayer in Kayll Road Library, Sunderland. A congregation member from St Gabriel Church had hoped to put up the poster but was shocked when she was turned away. Sunderland Council says it is reviewing its guidelines in light of the row. But religious leaders from all denominations across the city criticised the poster ban as extraordinary...

Nail from Christ's crucifixion found?

The four-inch long nail is thought to be one of thousands used in crucifixions across the Roman empire. Archaeologists believe it dates from either the first or second century AD. The nail was found last summer in a decorated box in a fort on the tiny isle of Ilheu de Pontinha, just off the coast of Madeira. Pontinha was thought to have been held by the Knights Templar, the religious order that was part of the Christian forces which occupied Jerusalem during the Crusades in the 12th century. The knights were part of the plot of Dan Brown's best-selling novel, The Da Vinci Code.

SeaWorld witness: Agitated whale dove over and over with the trainer's body in his mouth

In dozens of witness statements released by the Orange County Sheriff's Office, workers described the chaotic moments surrounding Dawn Brancheau's death. About 50 guests were on a photo tour, watching Tilikum through an underwater glass as he interacted with Brancheau at the water's surface.
