Erdogan: Turkey No Longer Interested in EU Membership
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during a speech to his country's parliament that he's no longer interested in European Union membership.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters Tuesday his government is no longer interested in European Union membership.

In a speech to his nation’s parliament, he said:

"We will not be the side which gives up. To tell the truth, we don't need EU membership anymore.

The EU failed us in a fight against terrorism. If the EU is going to leap forward, there is only one way to do so. And it is to grant Turkey membership and start an action of cultural and economic growth."

Turkey remains a member of NATO, but German Chancellor Angela Merkel has repeatedly blocked its admission to the EU. These new comments, in addition to Erdogan’s continued overtures to both Russia and Iran, suggest those tensions will continue to build.
