Google Trends: ‘Bible Belt’ Has More Porn Consumption
The Bible Belt has the highest rates of consumption of pornography in the U.S., according to online search data.

Believe it or not, the so-called “Bible Belt” of the U.S. tends to consume more pornography than areas that are less conservative or religiously faithful.

Researchers at Brock University, after poring over two years’ worth of Google Trends data, concluded that states that tended to be “more religious” also searched for websites using the term “sex” far more often than the national average. The state with the most porn users was determined to be Utah, which declared it a “public health crisis” in 2009.

The state also ranks No. 1 in subscriptions to pornographic websites, according to Harvard University economics professor Benjamin Edelman. His report, Red Light States: Who Buys Online Adult Entertainment? states:

[There were] only two states with subscription rates higher than 3.6 per thousand home broadband users: Utah and Mississippi. Utah topped the list, with 5.47 users per 1,000 … Subscriptions are slightly more prevalent in states that have enacted conservative legislation on sexuality.

Dr. Ted Roberts, a former Marine Corps fighter pilot and pastor who has counseled thousands of men to freedom from porn, explains why in the six-DVD Conquer Series, which aims to help men break free of pornography and sexual addiction.

Citing a study by Patrick Carnes, he said 70 percent of sex addicts come from disengaged homes, adding:

"What’s the definition of a rigid, disengaged home? That’s a fundamental evangelical home, which has a lot of rules and not a focus on relationships. They are afraid the kids won’t follow the faith, so they have rules for grade school, rules for middle school, rules for high school. Then [the kids] go to college and fall off a cliff. They never inculcated the faith deep down in their soul. They don’t have a real, in-depth relationship with Christ emotionally."

If it became its own state, the Church in America would have the highest consumption of pornography. Studies show more than 68 percent of churchgoing men view porn on a regular basis.

The Conquer Series, however, is helping men all over the world find freedom by identifying how it is affecting their brains, and by presenting a biblical, grace-filled “battle plan” to conquer the addiction.
