A new report puts together several threads and weaves a disturbing hypothesis that links Republican efforts to derail former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore’s senatorial campaign with Democratic efforts to impeach President Donald Trump and remove him from office.
Over the weekend, the political “inside baseball” website DCWhispers reported that at least one of its sources is pointing to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and his staffers as the likely source of the attacks against Moore.
McConnell, according to the source, wants the president impeached and removed from office, and taking Moore out of the equation is one less vote to protect Trump. The source is quoted as saying:
"I strongly suspect it’s a very short list of people, all who are associated with Mitch McConnell—whether it’s Josh Holmes, whether it’s Karl Rove, might even be Steven Law—I don’t know, but I strongly, strongly suspect somebody out of the McConnell camp planted the story. It was planted. This came with the blessing of Mitch McConnell at some point, that he was going to take a political shot at Roy Moore."
According to the report, it’s simply a numbers game to the majority leader.
If Moore won’t step aside, allowing McConnell to pick his replacement—likely Sen. Luther Strange—then the Republican leader is more than happy to allow the seat go to Doug Jones, a Clinton-connected Democrat according to the source.
